Food to Die For??

Was it arsenic in the
sugared almonds or cyanide in the cough mixture? Questions for the
audience at the latest Murder Mystery evening at The Old Vicarage
Guesthouse. The cast of “Wingin’ It”, under the professional
direction of Naomi Kenny, certainly kept everyone guessing with their
production starring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The plot, written by
Karen Boult, was set in the 1890s and the costumes were amazing,
thanks to the clever hands of Val Knowles and Naomi Kenny. Everyone
joined in with the fun and frivolity with some guests adding to the
candle lit atmosphere by dressing in period - with Morag from
Aberdeen a worthy winner of the prize for “best dressed.”

There was no doubt that
the “poison” was not found in the delicious 4 course meal which
accompanied the script. The deep red colour of the Coq au Vin did
however add to the murderous scene! All in all - a truly great Who
Dunnit?. Maurice and Ruth from the Old Vicarage wish to thank
all the cast of Wingin’ It and also to thank Norma Miles for her
amazing interpretation of 3 Music Hall songs. To the great amusement
of all the audience, during her rendition of “The Boy I love is up
in the Gallery,” the “boys” enthusiastically waved white
tablecloths rather than hankies, to gain her attention and her love!

Next event at The Old
Vicarage is on Sunday 17th March, a celebration for St
Patrick’s Night with live music and song and once again delicious
food. Contact us on 01289 306909 or e-mail

After a complimentary cocktail you can enjoy a four course dinner here at 24 Church Road, Tweedmouth interspersed with an intriguing, exciting and entertaining murder mystery drama. The Reverend and Mrs Harvey are preparing a special dinner party and welcome home for their daughter Stephanie and her new husband, Paul. We were proud to represent Northumberland - the other two finalists were from Co. Durham. Open from April 1st to September 30th, several boat trips are available from Seahouses. These are very weather dependent, so it would be a good idea to contact Seahouses TIC for sailing information. This has to be one of the best wildlife experiences in the British Isles, the chance to get very close to breeding birds and seals, to get great photos of many different species. Check up on what is happening there by logging in to their blog:- http://farnephoto.blogspot.com/ . By the end of July, most of the birds will have dispersed - and the focus of attention switches to the seals. Amazing close-ups of some of the 3-4,000 Grey Seals are possible, the seal pups are always a great favourite with visitors. Visit Longstone island and find out about the Grace Darling story of heroism at sea. The Islands are owned by the National Trust who take responsibility for conserving the wildlife, so landings are restricted during the breeding season. A visit to The Farnes is a must as part of a holiday in North Northumberland. We are about half an hour away from Seahouses, and can help plan a visit to The Farnes, including picnic lunches.

Findlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-26672015837316254772011-06-01T09:19:00.000-07:002011-06-01T09:57:33.884-07:00May 2011
Paxton House is just 10 minutes away by car from The Old Vicarage Guesthouse here in Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is a lovely place to visit at just about any time of the year, but the summer music season is special. Their 2011 festival runs from the 15th July to the 24th July. For details check out their web-site http://www.musicatpaxton.co.uk
Pre-concert suppers are available and a stroll around the grounds is a must on a summer's afternoon. Plan a visit to Paxton, with a stay here at the Old Vic and take advantage of any special offers we may have - just ask for details. Demonstrations of salmon fishing and tagging are on-going through the summer, and the galleries showcase the work of artists and craftspeople from The Borders and North Northumberland. Wildlife lovers can enjoy the hides for excellent views of birds including nuthatches, woodpeckers and even red squirrels.

Findlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-12385885932087378412011-05-03T08:27:00.000-07:002011-05-03T09:44:00.828-07:00April 2011

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a great base from which to explore North Northumberland and The Borders. Visitors can easily spend a week here and want to come back for more. Starting with The Town itself, we have the Walk around The Elizabethan Town Walls; Berwick Barracks at Wallace Green; The Cromwellian Church at Wallace Green; The Main Guard at Palace Street; The Berwick Museum at Wallace green and The Town Hall with its own Jailhouse. A great way to get to grips with The Town's Heritage is to take advantage of the Guided Walks with Derek Sharman MBE. Starting from the Tourist Information Centre at Marygate, these walks are an experience not to be missed! Friendly, entertaining and informative about 700 years of our turbulent history. His "Town and Walls" Tours are at 10.00 a.m. and 11.45 a.m. Monday to Friday, Easter to October. There is also a Sunday afternoon "Hidden Berwick" Tour at 2 p.m. from May to September. Traditionally local residents riding on horseback scour the Berwick boundaries to ensure the Scottish have not encroached onto English soil. In reality we hope they have arrived to fill our caravan parks, hotels and guesthouses for Easter! Events kick off from about 9.30 a.m. in the area of the Barracks. From there they parade to the Guildhall to get permission from the Town's Mayor to check the Town's boundaries are intact. The 15 mile ride has traditional stops along the way, eventually re-entering town about 3.30 p.m. It is a colourful and spectacular gathering worth seeing if you are in the area. Skilled riders can participate if they can hire a horse or bring their own with riders permits available from the Tourist Information centre :- 01289 301780. Spectating is of course free, as is the horse manure for your roses!!

Findlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-71021496474338495552011-03-13T10:25:00.000-07:002011-03-13T12:21:55.419-07:00March 2011
An unusual day out this month found Maurice and Ruth at a local farm in The Borders, in Berwickshire actually, with Chris and Denise Walton at Peelham Farm (www.peelham.co.uk). There was a gathering of folk from all over to take part in their "adopt a pig "scheme. Having chosen and named your piglet, you can follow its progress by visiting the farm on several weekends in the following months. Eventually the pig is butchered and you have all the products to take home. The advantage to the pig is that it leads a free range happy lifestyle compared to those reared in intensive units. The advantage to you is knowing exactly where your food came from and how it was produced organically. They even grow all their own crops to feed all their livestock, as well as the grass for their sheep and cattle. Why not give the car a holiday and do it by bus. We are on the coastal path running North and South from Berwick-Upon-Tweed. Spend a day walking North towards St Abbs Head in Scotland. Spend a day walking south towards Lindisfarne. Bus it to Beal and spend a whole day exploring the wonderful Holy Isle with its great array of wintering birds. Visits to the Island are tide dependent. Spend a day in the Cheviots exploring one of the many river valleys there. Spend a day following the River Tweed upstream, or bus inland and walk the river back towards Berwick. Plenty of options if you want to get close to the natural environment and nature. Take a picnic lunch freshly prepared here at The Old Vicarage. We can advise on great days out - you might even come across an otter like the one shown which was photographed by Laurie Campbell not far away on the River Tweed.

Findlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-53771799853315845572011-02-08T08:30:00.001-08:002011-02-08T09:00:38.404-08:00February 2011
It's never too late for that romantic get-a-way!! Weekend is just two weeks away
hi all - holidays are looming and we are waiting to meet your needs here at The Old Vicarage Guesthouse, Berwick-upon-Tweed. I've been getting outside a lot more this week with the increase in temperature and all the nesting going on in the garden. Talking of getting out more, there are so many great days out up here in North Northumberland and The Borders. I would like to tell you about some of them. Base yourself here and have easy access to Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle. Tide timetables are always available here and your visit is dependent on safe crossing times. You can of course go on and stay over when the tide is in and the Island is cut off - and experience the real atmosphere of Lindisfarne. The Castle opening times are also tide dependent but are usually from 10 to 3 or 12 to 5 - check out the NT website for more details www.nationaltrust.org.uk
For nature lovers - enjoy the relative tranquility of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve. There are some guided walks available during the season if you want to know more about this wonderful place. Follow the Nature Trail, but from April to July there are a lot of breeding birds so stick to the paths and be careful of the many ground nesting species.
Stop off at The Barn at Beal on your way to or from Holy Island. Good place for lunch or just a coffee/tea break. Great stopover if you have to wait for the tide to fall. For more detail check out www.barnatbeal.com

Some folk do Holy island and Bamburgh in one day. But if you are in no rush, spend an entire day exploring Lindisfarne Island and The National Nature Reserve. It seems to be all the craze these days. The Old Vicarage Guesthouse has just got a Green Tourism award – a silver award at our first attempt! For months now I have observed Maurice and Ruth putting in long life light bulbs, water saving devices in the loos, installing water butts, even replacing old windows with double-glazed units, not to forget a brand new condensing boiler.

Me? I'm all in favour of saving energy. I choose the sunniest spots to lie up in. I don't chase around after the wildlife, I wait for it to come to me! I firmly believe in getting through each day with the least expenditure of energy (I think Maurice is in favour of this approach too). The Old Vicarage has always been wildlife friendly with its ivy covered walls, hedges and some trees including two lovely English Elms. Maurice has put up boxes including a bat box would you believe. This year he went the extra mile with a box for swifts!! So far they have ignored it even though he played a tape of swift calls to try to attract them – what a carry-on!! Swifts are amazing in that they never land on the ground as they can't take off again. Recently we had an exciting incident when a grounded swift was attacked by a territorial starling. I was sleeping in the drawing room and missed all the fun, but apparently the starling was dive-bombing the swift and would have killed it only Maurice intervened and saved it (see photo). He put it in a bag to recover and later released it from a top floor window and it flew away and rejoined its family in the streets nearby. For more information on swifts look up London swifts

So, here's to more “green” tourists and more wildlife to enjoy around the Old Vicarage. Maurice and Ruth will even help with bird-watching trips in North Northumberland and the Borders. We have great places within easy reach such as Holy Island (Lindisfarne NNR); St. Abb's Head; and the lovely valleys of the Cheviots. Must go and check up on the birds in the garden again.

Findlay.Findlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-88863725429634333222009-07-15T14:44:00.000-07:002009-07-15T15:15:42.849-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUYXjCQv75HKvZcZ48olN1bbU6IjRtCiDiZ_xajyxyx6yXykoif80KnnNqt8mZ9q9-LoS6cWpudktEtxF-Aj01Ncejoy97R96U5FBzXQXxalX95p4Izxes8x9U5826KRRj4fOm-7Z0Vi4/s320/findlayatvic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358806296148616834" />Not sure what to make of being upgraded to 5 stars – my “front-of house” role should really be appreciated even more than it is. Perhaps I should be on a better diet. Maurice is so slow sometimes when I try to drop the hint about the boring food from the Co-op. There are one or two flavours that I tire of very quickly. I know it winds him up terribly when I refuse to eat the offerings. He doesn't know what I have been eating or how some neighbours like me too!!

Maurice and Ruth seem to be very pleased with their new status as 5 star. It does reward all the hard work they have put in here over the last 4 years to welcome people to Berwick-upon-Tweed. They have been out changing the signs, but I noticed that their web-site still has a 4 star logo! Honestly, you just can't get the staff these days! Anyway, if it brings in more guests then I will have even more knees to choose from in the drawing room.

The season is really in full swing now, we seem to have been full all month. Had to get my “jab” recently which was a bit of a shock when Maurice grabbed me and hauled me off to the vet. Bit nerve-racking with all those strange dogs and cats coming and going. Have to go back for the follow-up soon too. Mixed feelings about that, but nice to have the protection. Overheard comments about the expense of it all, but I know they love me really and value my contribution to this establishment. By the way, there is a photo of me also on the web-site (www.oldvicarageberwick.co.uk) if you look at the one showing car parking – that's me on the right walking up the drive towards the photographer. I knew something was going on and wanted to be in the picture! There's room for 5 cars off-road and easy parking outside as well – but I really don't like cars, which I may tell you about some other time.

Bye for now – Findlay xxFindlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6585336075024705652.post-69068191832353062992009-07-15T14:40:00.000-07:002009-07-16T03:37:47.528-07:00My First Blogg!!!Hello there – I am Findlay the cat and I live at The Old Vicarage Guesthouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, England – just. I say “just” because we are very close to the border here in North Northumberland. I have been asked to respond to my fans, people who have stayed here at some time and have mentioned me in dispatches. The owners of The Old Vicarage (Maurice and Ruth) have often commented on how popular I am. I play my part in welcoming guests and am often found sprawled across someone's knee in the drawing room. I am banned from the dining room but have the run of the place generally – except for those rare occasions when a guest is allergic to cats or does not like me at all, and I am banned from just about everywhere!

I even get a mention on trip advisor – that internet site that people can look up for reports on places they might want to stay in. We're very lucky to have lots of great reports – check out the latest ones to see me getting a mention.

I'll be keeping you informed about life here – at the moment breeding season for all the birds around is in full swing and I am keeping a close eye on the broods of sparrows, blackbirds etc. which are on my patch. If I can't catch any, I make sure that none of the neighbouring moggies do! It's a full time job patrolling the grounds. I sometimes stay out all night in the great weather we've been having here in the north-east. It does annoy Maurice somewhat when I refuse to come in so he can lock the cat-flap.

There's lots to tell about The Old Vicarage, including being upgraded to five stars – speak to you soon. Bye for now -

Findlay xxFindlayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02681942731934016233noreply@blogger.com0
